Course Overview

The Modeller's Toolkit consists of two parts, General and Advanced (delivered over two non-consecutive days). You can complete each of the parts independently of one another based on your existing knowledge and skills. You may decide to complete the course in its entirety (attend both General and Advanced) to build up your knowledge and skills of the course materials.

Course Objectives

The Modeller's Toolkit - General course will provide a hands-on practical opportunity to apply leading excel practices such as shortcuts, formulas and formatting. The course will also cover some common scenarios a modeler may come across.

Duration: 1.0 day / 7.0 hours
Course level: Intermediate
Course type:  Instructor-led, in-person or virtual.
Prerequisites: None
Who should attend: Targeted to anyone using Excel to perform calculations of any sort.
Format: Interactive lecture, participant discussion and hands-on practical.

  • A simple approach to format a model.    
  • How to navigate Excel covering Usedrange, file size issues and fixes, dependency trees and volatile functions
  • 30+ Fundamental functions, including Dates, lookups, financial, logical, string, etc.
  • A review of the feature formula design covering navigation and evaluation.
  • What makes a formula reviewable.
  • How to format custom numbers.
  • How to include comments for review.    
  • A review of Excel tools covering Named Ranges, Data Validation, Goal Seek, Grouping, Find-Replace and File protection.
  • What is VBA and how to use it.
  • A visual of best practices and Modelling 'tricks'.
