Course Overview

General Data Management and Analysis (GDMA) consists of three parts (delivered over three days). You can complete each of the parts independently of one another. We suggest the course is completed in its entirety (all three days) to build up your knowledge and skills of the course materials.

Course Objectives - Part 1

Part 1 of the GDMA course is for Excel users that not only want to create robust and dynamic spreadsheets but also tap further into the tools Excel has to offer and increase the use of keyboard shortcuts. 
Duration: 1.0 day / 7.0 hours
Course level: Introductory
Course type: Instructor-led, in-person or virtual.
Prerequisites: None
Who should attend: Experienced Excel users looking to further your data management and analysis skills.
Format:
Interactive lecture, participant discussion and hands-on practical. 

What you will learn:

  • How to prepare Excel and format, including the value of consistent formatting, custom number formats, quick access toolbar and conditional formatting.
  • Simple ways to navigate Excel, including workbooks, worksheets, Windows and File Explorer.
  • How to use essential data functions, including Text, Date, Subtotal, Lookup, Index, Match and Math.
  • A step-by-step process to use data scrubbing and extraction, including importing and scrubbing data, removal of duplicates, Text to Columns, Flash Fill and source citation.
  • How to use data management including Auto-Filter, Advanced Filter.
  • Simple ways to use visualization, including sparklines.
  • Practical and time-saving file management methods, such as file naming convention, file saving practices and change log.
  • A step-by-step process for review management, such as WIP formatting and commenting for review.
